Rynok Square – The Heart of Lviv Walking tour (3 hours) Since its foundation Rynok Square has always been the centre of life in Lviv. The Square witnessed the arrivals of dukes, kings and their royal families. Thives, liers, adulterers and others were executed here. Cinnamon, ginger, raisins and lemons were sold here; people talked, bargain, gossiped and communicated in all the languages of the world there. Very few of Lvivers would not dream of living here. But that was available only for the privileged: there was a lack of land and the price for it in the centre was very high. Nevertheless if someone was lucky to obtain a piece of land there then he did not spare neither time nor money to get the best materials and the best masters-constructors to build and decorate magnificent houses, which all the neighbours would envy and the descendants would be proud of.

The Fortifications of the Ancient Lviv Walking tour (3 hours) During over 350 years (since the mid XIV century) Lviv has withstood 24 sieges, and no army managed to occupy it. It has survived after Tatars and Turks invasions, onslaught of Bogdan Khmel’nytskyy cossaks and marksmen of the Russian tsar Aleksey Mikhaylovych. Only once – in 1704 – Swedish army of Karl XII managed to break through the defence line. Lviv had got such a glorious history thanks to its strong fortification walls. Few cities of Central Europe had such a developed fortification system. During Austria-Hungarian Empire part of fortification was destroyed for it prevent the building of new streets. Still it was impossible to raze them totally to the ground. They stand firmly for their place in the city and beat off the attacks of time.
